Traveller Movement Policy & Campaigning
| |
| |
This month we at the Traveller Movement have been working hard behind the scenes to clarify changes made to the T code through the new Attendance Guidance. We released a statement on our socials to assure people that the changes made should not affect those that the T code previously applied to. We will continue to work with the DfE to ensure that these changes protect Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller children and their families. Our Senior Policy Officer and our Policy Intern attended the Show Racism the Red Card APPG this month. We look forward to working further with SRtRC and the APPG.

Recently, we’ve been working hard on updating all of our resources and information on our education microsite. This is a place that we house publications and guides for both parents, professionals and individuals to support them in navigating the world of education. Keep an eye out for the relaunch on social media, where we’ll have a much more accessible and up to date site for you to refer to. We’ve been very busy with calls since the start of the new school term, with lots of concerned parents wondering what new policies will mean for them and their families. If you’re worried about an education issue, you can always contact Liv, our Community Advocacy Caseworker, on 07908 433413 to get some advice.

We are delighted to announce that our new report on Institutionally Coerced Exclusions will be released soon. We will be hosting roundtables and events to discuss this paper and its findings so keep an eye out for all those announcements. Our education policy team are working on bringing together a Coalition tackling race and faith-based bullying in schools, we are hoping to build a strong group of organisations to tackle this key issue. If your organisation is interested in joining this coalition email us: education@travellermovement.org.uk. Our Senior Policy & Advocacy Officer and our Policy Intern attended a knowledge sharing event hosted by key partners in the education and exclusions space. There they spoke with changemakers and partners identifying opportunities for collaboration and discussing ongoing challenges in tackling school exclusions.
