Traveller Movement Policy & Campaigning

Operation Traveller Vote #OTV24

Operation Traveller Vote

With a general election looming (no date set yet) we have started the ball rolling on our #OperationTravellerVote campaign. Full details of our campaign and manifesto will be shared very soon.

Depressingly the usual hate speech and political rhetoric has started! Our Partnerships Manager Olivia Morrison recently spoke about the importance of politicians curbing hate speech against our communities on the JOEPolitics podcast on International Roma and Romani Day. Keep an eye on our social media to see further work on this important campaign.

To help us deliver our campaign and ensure voter registration and voting on the day we are looking for help. We are looking to recruit 5-10 Democracy Champions nationally.   The Democracy Champions will be offered sessional work over the course of the project and will support their local communities to register to vote by helping community members to fill in forms, attend local appointments and host informational workshops in their local areas. We’ll be sharing further information on this over the next few weeks.

If you, or someone you know is interested in applying please email Charlie on youth@travellermovement.org.uk

Applicants must be members of the Romani (Gypsy), Roma or Irish Traveller communities. You must be 18+.

Criminal Justice Policy

This month we attended the Fifth Evidence Session for the APPG on Children in Police Custody and listened to evidence from the College of Policing, HMIP and the CEO of the Independent Custody Visiting Association. Here we represented Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller children and ensured that police custody adopts a ‘Child First’ approach and tackles the discrimination which affects children from our communities when they come up against police custody.

We also received a response to our Written Question submitted by Kevin Brennan MP asking the Government whether they had assessed the policy implications of our Pre-Sentencing Report Toolkit: Fair Sentencing for Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller People.

‘HMPPS has been working closely with The Traveller Movement since the publication of ‘Pre-Sentencing Report Toolkit Fair Sentencing for Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller People’.

We are working through the report together to see how the some of the findings can better support our work.

As part of the HMPPS Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) Strategy, an Aide Memoir: ‘Preparing pre-sentence reports for ethnic minority people’ was published in December 2023, giving specific guidance and information regarding GRT community members. We will add to this as appropriate through the above-mentioned collaboration. We will also carefully consider the findings of the report regarding future policy reviews and updates.’

Education Policy

We had a busy month for Education policy this month, kicking off by attending our funder Mission 44s quarterly meeting with other organisations working in the sector. This proves to be an essential information sharing and knowledge gathering group, great for us to share information and best practices for working with our communities but also for us to gain essential insight from the wider sector.

Equality and Social Justice Unit (ESJU)

As part of our ongoing sector capacity building work we held our first Know Your Rights session of 2024 in March, in partnership with Hodge Jones and Allen Law firm. The session went well and covered a range of topics including children in custody, police in schools and stop and search. We will be hosting more Know Your Rights sessions in April and May. Please see below for more information:

  Youth Partnerships and Policy

It has been a busy couple of months for the Reaching Out programme.  In February we held our 4th and 5th Connected Community Events in person in Liverpool and online in Essex.  Thank you to all the speakers at both these events and those stakeholders that helped make them happen.  The events have helped raise awareness of the need to provide appropriate pathways into Employment, Education and Training for Gypsy, Traveller and Roma young people.  Importantly, they have also helped embed this important need into the local and regional strategy and decision-making processes regionally and locally.

With the programme coming to an end, we have our last Connected Communalities event planned for the 24th June 2024.  This will be a national event bringing together all those 5 regions we have worked with over the last 2-years – Essex, Kent, Liverpool, Manchester and London.   The event will seek to identify 3 or 4 core aims to work towards over the coming years for the Traveller Movement and wider stakeholders.

We will have more details of this in the next Spotlight Edition though if you are interested in knowing more or get involved, please contact our partnerships team on partnerships@travellermovement.org.uk

The members of our Youth Influencer Program have completed their training in content creation and have begun making and releasing content online that will portray their communities in a positive light. They are also paid to create content for us, helping us to promote our work.

London Partnerships

We are looking to recruit 5 community advocates as part of our London-wide inter-agency project focused on improving Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller inclusion. The community advocates will be offered sessional work over the course of the project and will support their local communities to access services by helping community members to fill in forms, attend local appointments and host informational workshops in their local areas. We’ll be sharing further information on this over the next few weeks.

If you, or someone you know is interested in applying please email Olivia at business@travellermovement.org.uk

Applicants must be members of the Romani (Gypsy), Roma or Irish Traveller communities. You must be 18+ and living in London.
